Internet makes everything better..

History of Internet in Bangladesh

From the 1996 the VSAT base data circuit was commissioned for the first time at the inspiration of private organization in the country. Upon VSAT commissioning, internet connectivity was established & its services were made available to the public. After internet was launched, the June 1996 National polls results were made available to the net of the world using World Wide Web. This was the first ever usage event of its kind in Bangladesh. The effort was appreciated in many corners especially among the Bangladeshis living abroad. Later many popular events were put on the web servers to make these available on the Internet. Couple of these included 'cyclone warning' and 'disaster information', cricket match, a wide variety of business information, local educational programmes, entertainment and many more.

After the introduction of Internet, the use of email increased exponentially owing to point to point direct transmission. Prior to it dial-up links were used to communicate to an overseas e-mail server using international phone calls. The uploading & downloading
of mails took place using UUCPs (Unix-to-Unix copy).

Use of chat and introduction of usenet news were also a significant addition to the local users of the net. Now with on-line services all other usage and services of the Internet are available to the end users of the internet in Bangladesh too.

Growth of Local Internet
The mid 1996 introduction of Internet did not instantly create a market. At the end of year, there were only two ISPs in the country and the numbers of users were close to one thousand only. The year 1997 recorded a tremendous growth. The total numbers of ISPs were more than a dozen and the clientele growth was ten times higher than that of the previous year. Afterwards, a few new ISPs started their venture recording a proportionate growth in number of users. As of now the total number of ISPs in the country is approximately 100+ and there are approximately 30 lac users connected to them. In last couple of years, some wide variety of Internet services popularly known as value added services, were introduced. These include Internet fax & internet telephony services.
But the current number of user is not the optimal level. There are some reason why the Internet user is less in number that are,
• Education system of Bangladesh
• Electricity problem
• Insufficient Backbone network
• Economic problem
• Lacking of Government Initiative
• Poor knowledge about Computers
• Lack of English language

Looking for an Outsourcing partner in Bangladesh??????

About Bangladesh

Bangladesh is a low-lying riverine country located in South Asia. Bangladesh is bordered by India to the east, north, and west and shares a short border with Myanmar (Burma) at the southeast. With a population of 152.6 million, Bangladesh is the most densely populated agricultural country in the world.

At present Information Technology (IT) is a subject of widespread interest in Bangladesh. With a large number of educated young people, internet and other benefits of ICT are being used to create new jobs in the rural areas. Cheap labor is the biggest asset for Bangladesh. This huge population is now being converted in to human resources, which in turn is creating ample opportunity for ITES (Information Technology Enabled Services).

Bangladesh is very optimistic in getting to the frontline of ICT revolution. To begin with, it has a very young population. Half the population of Bangladesh is under twenty. They are very creative too. With little or no help, some of these young people are coming up with great success stories in ICT.

Bangladesh got connected to the main internet backbone (Sub Marine Cable) through fiber optic under Bay of Bengal, which has added remarkable value to its ICT and ITES (Information Technology Enabled Services). At present the BPO companies are delivering jobs/orders much faster and as a result, the TAT (Turn Around Time) is reduced.
